Business marketing has changed a great deal over the years. Nowadays, your business needs to show up on social media and the internet, at large, if you want to have a fighting chance for success and financial growth. While there are exceptions to this statement – for most business owners you will need to have a presence online to do well.
For most business owners you will need to have a presence online, to do well.
A common concern for small business owners and entrepreneurs is being on camera to share about their business. When we are training and helping our clients, we provide them with various ways to do their videos - reels, shorts, stories, YT videos etc; that don’t include them in the footage. However, for the vast majority, being on camera is a must!
The first thing to do before you begin to create any video content is to remember that practice leads to IMPROVEMENT!

Give yourself grace.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. It can be daunting at times to see polished professional-looking videos on your social media feeds and then look at your content. Being overly critical can cause you to procrastinate on video creation. Instead, we recommend doing a few practice runs.
Record yourself, without planning on uploading the content.
That way, you remove a lot of the pressure from yourself as you are not subconsciously thinking about the mistakes you might make and how you look/appear.
Begin to narrate random activities in your everyday life.
For example, making dinner - talk to yourself as though you are talking on a cooking show. Be carefree and casual about it. Let your personality come through. Maybe try doing a talk through when you are doing a random house project - changing the batteries in your smoke detectors or deep cleaning your car.
Yep - it will be very weird initially. You might even feel yourself laughing at your commentary. Just GO WITH IT!

We have found that by getting yourself used to hearing your own voice and formulating your thoughts and words, without the pressure of the camera, when you do sit down to record content for your business - it will be less uncomfortable; more natural.
Always have a plan/script/outline.
As a business owner, your time is limited and precious. Time literally IS MONEY! Having a plan of what you want to say BEFORE you hit the record button is paramount. Otherwise, you will find yourself repeating, stuttering, doing lengthy pauses, and making lots of mistakes. While editing is the greatest invention for video creation, you don’t want to spend lots of time cutting, adding and editing a piece of work. Even if you do not plan to edit your own content, you don’t want to have to pay a video editor more money because it is taking your editor more time to edit your content. It just makes sense.
Look Good. Sound Good.
Depending on where you are financially, you may or may not be able to invest in expensive audio and visual equipment. That is fine. Your cell phone is great to start! As your business grows, your equipment can improve also. However, do not use that as a crutch for procrastination. In this moment, decide that you will work with what you have and get over it! We have worked with so many small business owners and entrepreneurs who have neglected to build their online presence because they are “waiting on better audio visual equipment”. Tough training coming up in 5, 4, 3, 2…
SUCK IT UP, BUTTER CUP! You are making excuses and hurting your business growth.
When using your cell phone, or any camera, the two main things you want to focus on - apart from QUALITY CONTENT - are LIGHTING and MICROPHONE.
Poor lighting can immediately deter viewers and potential customers from your videos. If you are going to make any financial investment, lighting should be at the top. Check out these videos and see for yourself…big difference, right?
Now for the audio, the same applies. The more clear and crisp your audio is, the better! Muffled voiceovers make for less engagement and your audience might miss out on the important parts of your content!
JUST DO IT ALREADY.
The number one thing that is stopping you from showing up online to promote your business is the fact that you have not decided to do it. In this moment, make a decision to upload your content on a specific day and time.

Be intentional about your plans. Make it a non negotiable. Get your audio visual equipment (remember your phone with proper lighting and microphone is great to start). Write your script/outline. Begin narrating your everyday life to get comfortable with talking. Then PRESS RECORD!
